New York City, 1993. The nadir of my existence. I'm poor, in a dead-end job and living in a roach-infested, yet outrageously expensive apartment in Soho, where, during the summer, I could lay in bed and listen to both wealthy New Yorkers dine in the garden of a posh eatery AND hear rats squeaking in my apartment's courtyard, which was just on the other side of the wall of the restaurant.
The one highlight to this otherwise miserable time (other than my friends and family, of course)? A coworker introduced me to Mystery Science Theater 3000, a gift that has kept on giving in the 16 years since. Now that the original cast has reformed and is performing around the country as Cinematic Titanic, I've been able to meet them a couple of times. Most people probably haven't even heard of MST3K or its stars and couldn't care less, but if my 1993 self could've seen that, in the not-too-distant future, I'd get to meet my hero, Joel Hodgson, I would've known for sure that things got better somewhere along the way.
